ABWN Press Release
The coming decade is a critical one in the political life of our continent. As most countries prepare to go for elections, the African Businesswomen’s Network (ABWN) is calling on African nations to take a bold step and commit to closing the gender gap in politics. Africa ought to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), thus stakeholders should cease this opportunity and put steps in place to ensure that women run and take up political positions.
The ABWN makes a call to women on the continent to run for political office. We also congratulate and draw attention to the many women who have already made that decision. We put our support behind them and call on societies to embrace this responsibility to rally to ensure women get a fair opportunity to contribute.
The ABWN collectively reaches over 100,000 women and we are represented in Cameroon by the Cameroon Businesswomen’s Network (CBWN), in Ghana by the Eagle Women’s Empowerment Club (EWEC), in Kenya by the Kenya Association of Women Business Owners (KAWBO), in Nigeria by the Women in Management and Business (WIMBIZ), in Uganda by the Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL) and in South Africa by the Businesswomen’s Association (BWA). The shared goals of ABWN are to build a network of women succeeding as entrepreneurs and leaders in the corporate world; to raise the profile and credibility of women in business; to foster global networking opportunities among businesswomen; and to advocate for policies that expand economic opportunities for women. Thus, a partnership with us, ensures your organization identifies with over 100,000 women across Africa.
Women make over 52% of the population of Africa and as the continent struggles to move from mainly frontier markets to emerging societies, it is critical that we close the gender gap in Politics, Education, Health and Economics.
This is the decade of impact because societies that empower women to grow strong, equally grow stronger. This is what the ABWN and its partners aim to achieve. To learn more about the ABWN and our partners, please contact your local branch.
