I came in contact with WIMBIZ in 2006, at a seminar tagged 'Winning Without Compromise' organized in my alma mater, the University of Lagos. I was in my final year at the time, and was at a crossroads on what direction my life would take career wise after graduation. I was especially bothered by the glass ceiling syndrome faced by women in the workplace and at the not too positive way society views career women, believing they can't have a successful marriage or family life and a career at the same time. It was therefore inspiring to see and hear women of the WIMBIZ organization, tell of how they overcame the obstacles to having a successful family life, while at the same time advancing to the top of their chosen fields or careers, without compromising their values and beliefs. At the end of the seminar, the WIMBIZ organizers decided to give most of us who had come for the seminar, the opportunity to work albeit temporarily, for some of the organizations WIMBIZ is associated with. This decision was taken partly to give most of us an edge, when we do eventually enter the labour market and partly to supplement our incomes, so that the temptation to compromise our values for monetary gains would be greatly reduced. I am one of the beneficiaries of that decision and I work as a hostess with Eventful ltd, which is an event management company here in Lagos. This job has given me the opportunity to see how high profile events are organized and co-ordinated, to see highly successful and motivated individuals interact, and to top it off, add to my income. I can, therefore, say in all honesty, that I am Winning Without Compromise.

God bless ‘WIMBIZ’

The posters of the Seminar were all over the campus and the theme was – ‘Winning without compromise’. As it turned out I was lucky to have attended.

I am Abiola Thaddeus, fresh graduate of sociology from University of Lagos. I became one of the numerous beneficiaries of Women in Business and Management (WIMBIZ)’s campus initiatives.

This particular seminar was inspiring and highly motivating. The speakers and facilitators were great. Their enthusiasm and confidence were readily contagious. The presentations were indeed apt and eye-opening, especially for someone like me who was then a final year student, about to leave the university to face the challenges of life. I admire and appreciate the organizers. I mean out of their tight and busy schedules, taking time out to empower female undergraduates. God bless ‘WIMBIZ’ and the beautiful brains behind it.

The seminar ended and to keep in touch, we were told to drop our names and phone numbers. And so a couple of months later, I got a call from Eventful Limited, an event planning and coordinating outfit, owned and run by Mrs. Yewande Zacchaeus, who I later understood to be one of the  pioneers of WIMBIZ. The call was for an interview for a job with the company. After the interview, 25 girls, undergraduates and fresh graduates (waiting for NYSC) were later trained as event hostesses. And shortly after, it was one job after another for the company, and the pay is good.

The job’s benefits are many: it has enabled me to lose my fears of meeting people. I was the type that easily shied away in a crowd, but right now, my confidence and self-esteem have had a big boost. I am now a people person. The job has also made me come in contact with people I hold in high esteem. People I have only seen on television or read about in the papers.

Now, while still waiting for the NYSC, I am not at home bored, I am more focused, have more confidence and more prepared to face the future.

My many thanks to Eventful Ltd. and much more to WIMBIZ.
